What NMC Looks For
Insight
Genuine understanding of what went wrong - the single most important factor NMC evaluates
Evidence
Documented remediation: CPD, reflection, supervision - submitted early and structured clearly
Change
Verifiable changes to practice that reduce the risk of the same concern arising again

Receiving an NMC letter can feel devastating. You are not alone in this.

Thousands of nurses and midwives face NMC fitness to practise concerns each year. What separates those who move forward is not the absence of what went wrong - it is the quality of their response. Genuine engagement, early action, and clear evidence of change are what NMC committees look for.

Find the Course That Matches Your NMC Concern

Each course is mapped to a specific area of The Code - the professional standard NMC applies in every fitness to practise case. Identify the category that matches the concern raised, then use the course descriptions to find what is most directly relevant to your situation.

Ethics & Ethical Standards

Nurses and midwives reach for this category when their NMC concern involves a specific ethical failing - inadequate consent, breach of confidentiality, failure to act with honesty, or conduct that conflicts with the fundamental values of The Code.

NMC panels assess whether you understand the ethical principles you breached, not just whether you regret the outcome. Targeted ethics courses demonstrate that understanding directly.

Ethics & Ethical Standards for Nurses & Midwives

When NMC concerns relate to ethics - consent failures, breach of confidentiality, or conduct that conflicts with the fundamental values of nursing and midwifery - this course addresses the specific Code provisions at issue. You work through the ethical principles underpinning The Code and trace how each applies when things go wrong.

  • How consent failures, confidentiality breaches and dishonesty generate NMC referrals
  • Writing an ethical reflection that demonstrates genuine insight to NMC case examiners

  • Ethical communication with patients, families and colleagues

  • What constitutes a boundary violation in nursing and midwifery practice
  • The progression from minor lapses to serious breaches
  • Managing dual relationships and personal disclosures

Professionalism & Professional Standards

The most common reason nurses and midwives face NMC concerns is conduct that falls short of professional standards - communication failures, documentation failings, attitude toward patients or colleagues, or behaviour that NMC considers incompatible with the values of The Code.

Professionalism underpins every domain of The Code. A course aligned to the specific standard NMC has questioned shows you understand what is required and how your conduct measured against it.

Professionalism & Professional Standards for Nurses & Midwives

Built around The Code professional standards - the framework NMC uses to assess every nurse and midwife they investigate. Maps professional obligations to real clinical practice scenarios so you understand not just what The Code requires but what compliance looks like when regulators are watching.

  • How NMC distinguishes a clinical mistake from a professional failing under The Code
  • Demonstrating to NMC panels that professional standards have genuinely been internalised

  • Accountability in hierarchical clinical environments
  • Raising concerns about colleagues: when, how, and to whom

Probity, Honesty & Candour

NMC probity concerns are among the most serious the Council investigates. They include dishonesty in documentation, failure to be open after an adverse event, inaccuracies in fitness to practise submissions, and financial misconduct.

Probity failures challenge the fundamental trust NMC must have in a registrant. Completing a probity course early shows you recognise the seriousness and have engaged with what the obligation actually requires.

  • How to apply reflective frameworks to a specific NMC concern
  • What good written reflection looks like versus what case examiners dismiss

  • Root cause analysis applied to your own professional practice
  • Identifying personal, systemic and contextual factors that contributed
  • Designing personal safeguards that are realistic and verifiable

Professional Boundaries & Trust

Boundary concerns in nursing and midwifery - from inappropriate patient relationships to social media conduct - are treated seriously because they go directly to whether patients can be safe in a registrant's care.

When trust is at issue, NMC must be satisfied it can be restored. These courses address specifically where boundary and trust concerns arise and how to demonstrate that restoration is credible.
£65

  • How boundary erosion happens — the gradual process most nurses and midwives do not notice
  • Sexual boundaries: what constitutes a violation and the law that governs it

  • The NMC framework for assessing clinical competence in investigations
  • How to identify and address genuine competence gaps
  • CPD, supervised practice and assessment as remediation for competence concerns

How to Build Your NMC Remediation Response

A credible remediation response is not a list of certificates. It is a structured body of evidence that tells a coherent story of genuine change.

1

Identify the Specific Concern

Read your NMC notification carefully and identify which part of The Code the concern relates to. This determines which courses will be evidentially relevant to your response. If you are unsure, the Module on Insight is a good starting point for every case.

2

Choose and Start Your Courses Now

Select two or three courses most directly relevant to your concern and begin immediately. Early completion carries more evidential weight than certificates produced at the last minute. Access is instant on purchase.

3

Complete, Reflect, and Certificate

Work through each course at your own pace. Note how the content relates to your specific situation as you go - these notes become your reflective statement. Your CPD UK certified PDF certificate is issued automatically on completion.

4

Build and Submit Your Remediation Portfolio

Combine certificates with a reflective statement, evidence of practice changes, and where appropriate, supervisor or employer reports. Submit directly with your NMC response or provide to your legal representative or defence organisation.

Our Mission

FTP Courses exists because UK healthcare professionals facing regulatory investigations deserve more than generic CPD. They deserve targeted, evidence-based learning that directly addresses the standards their regulator is assessing - and they deserve it to be available immediately, when they need it most.

Our content is developed with awareness of how UK regulatory bodies assess insight, remediation, and professional fitness. We understand what case examiners look for, how panels evaluate evidence, and what genuinely good remediation looks like. That understanding shapes every word of every course.

What Nurses And Midwives Say After Using FTP Courses

Verified experiences from UK-registered nurses and midwives who used FTP Courses as part of their NMC remediation response. Names and details shared with permission.

★★★★★

A complaint from a patient's family led to an NMC notification that shook me to my core. I found FTP Courses through my union rep. The Ethics and Reflection modules helped me understand exactly what NMC's case examiners look for. I submitted my response with four certificates and a detailed reflective statement. The case was closed without referral.

★★★★★

Facing an NMC concern about documentation was terrifying. The Professionalism in Documentation course addressed every single issue raised in the notification letter. My solicitor was impressed with how targeted the evidence was. I would recommend starting these courses the day you receive your letter - not the week before your hearing.

★★★★★

The insight and reflection modules completely changed how I approached my NMC response. Instead of a defensive letter, I submitted a genuine, structured analysis of what went wrong and what I had changed. The panel commented positively on the quality of my self-reflection.

What Nurses and Midwives Ask Before They Enrol

Will completing these courses actually help my NMC case?
Completing relevant CPD can materially strengthen your remediation response. NMC panels look for evidence that you have reflected on the concern, engaged with the relevant part of The Code, and taken concrete steps to address the issue. Targeted, certified courses completed early and paired with a reflective statement form part of what a credible remediation response looks like. No course guarantees an outcome, but the absence of any remediation effort is consistently noted negatively by NMC case examiners.
When in the NMC process should I start these courses?
As early as possible. Remediation completed at the start of an investigation carries substantially more weight than evidence assembled shortly before a hearing or review. Early action signals genuine engagement rather than strategic compliance. If you have just received your NMC letter, starting a relevant course now - before you have responded - is appropriate and demonstrates the kind of proactive engagement NMC committees expect to see.
Which courses should I choose for my specific NMC concern?
Use the category tabs on this page. If your NMC letter references an ethics or consent concern, start with the Ethics category. If it mentions professional standards or conduct, start with Professionalism. If it involves honesty or candour, the Probity category is most relevant. The Module on Insight applies to every case because NMC assesses insight regardless of the nature of the concern. If you are unsure, contact us for guidance.
Can I complete more than one course, and should I?
Yes, and for most NMC cases two or three targeted courses is the right approach. A nurse or midwife who completes courses across different relevant areas of The Code demonstrates broader engagement than one who completes a single course. For serious concerns heading to a substantive hearing, four to five courses is not unusual. Your defence organisation or solicitor can advise on the right combination for your specific circumstances.
Will NMC accept these certificates as part of my remediation?
All courses are independently certified by CPD UK. NMC does not maintain an approved list of specific courses, but CPD UK certification is the standard measure of professional development accreditation in UK healthcare. The certificates are in PDF format and can be submitted with your NMC response, included in a remediation portfolio, or provided to your legal representative. Defence organisations and solicitors regularly include CPD UK certified courses in written submissions to NMC case examiners and panels.
